Case Study – Major Drainage and Artificial Grass Installation, Melloncroft Drive, West Kirby
This artificial grass installation on Melloncroft Drive in West Kirby was one of those projects where the appearance of the finished lawn only tells a small part of the story. The real challenge was underneath the surface.
The rear garden measured approximately 10 metres wide by 8 metres from the house to the rear boundary, giving an area of around 80m². The property occupies an elevated position on a slope overlooking the River Dee, with fantastic views and a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, the position of the property also created a serious drainage problem.
Even though we first assessed the garden during the summer, the existing natural lawn was extremely wet and muddy. Water was travelling down the slope from the direction of Column Hill, entering the garden and moving towards the house. Instead of draining naturally away from the property, large quantities of water were collecting within the lawn and against the rear of the house.
For the homeowners, the problem was particularly frustrating because this was a garden that needed to work hard for the family.
They had two dogs who regularly used the lawn, as well as four grandchildren whom they looked after frequently. The garden contained a trampoline, slide and other outdoor play equipment, so ideally it should have been an important area for the children to enjoy.
Instead, the amount of mud meant that using the garden often resulted in dirty shoes, muddy paws and mess being carried into the house.
Solving the Drainage Before Installing Artificial Grass
With a garden suffering from this amount of water, simply removing the natural turf and replacing it with artificial grass would not have solved the problem.
Artificial grass is permeable, but the water still needs somewhere to go once it passes through the surface. If the ground underneath remains saturated, drainage problems can continue regardless of how good the artificial lawn looks.
For this Melloncroft Drive project, the drainage therefore became the most important part of the installation.
We excavated the garden and planned a system designed to intercept the water moving down the slope before it could continue collecting around the house.
A total of six land drains were incorporated into the garden.
To accommodate the drainage system, we dug four substantial trenches approximately three feet deep. This was a much deeper and more involved excavation than would normally be required for a straightforward artificial grass installation.
Lengths of perforated, flexible drainage pipe were installed within the trenches and positioned to collect water from the surrounding ground. These drainage runs were then connected into the property’s main drainage system, giving the water a controlled route away from the garden.
This was essential. Rather than simply trying to make the surface look dry, we were tackling the source of the problem underneath.
Creating a Stable Base on a Wet, Sloping Garden
Once the land drainage had been installed and connected, we were able to start rebuilding the garden.
The ground needed a substantial, well-compacted sub-base capable of remaining stable under regular use from the family, dogs and children’s play equipment.
Correct levels were particularly important because of the natural slope of the property. We needed to maintain effective drainage while creating a practical finished lawn that did not feel excessively steep or uneven.
The base materials were installed, levelled and compacted in stages to create a firm foundation for the artificial grass.
Secure perimeter edging was also incorporated so that the finished lawn could be tightly fitted and held firmly in position. This is especially important in a busy family garden where children are running around, dogs are playing and equipment such as a trampoline can place additional pressure on the surface.
Installing the Artificial Lawn
Once we were satisfied that the drainage and groundwork were performing correctly, the artificial grass could finally be installed.
The lawn was carefully positioned, cut and secured to create a neat finish across the approximately 10m x 8m garden.
The difference was immediate.
The previously muddy lawn became a clean, consistent green surface that could be used without waiting for the ground to dry. The dogs could go outside without returning covered in mud, while the grandchildren had a far more practical area for playing around the trampoline, slide and other garden equipment.
